Today I want to talk with you about light therapy and how it helps to heal skin conditions like Psoriasis & Eczema.
Eczema - “Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a common chronic, relapsing skin disease characterized by pruritus, disrupted epidermal barrier function, and immunoglobulin E-mediated sensitization to food and environmental allergens. Atopic dermatitis is a complex disease that arises from interactions between genes and the environment.” (Article 1)
What are some symptoms?
Skin liaisons (inflamed red marks)
Itchiness
Dry skin
Psoriasis - “Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes red, itchy scaly patches, most commonly on the knees, elbows, trunk and scalp.” (Article 4)
Common symptoms:
Cracked & red patches of skin (scale-like)
Small inflamed spots
Swollen joints
Itching & burning
Acne is also a part of this list, but I have a separate article that explores this if you would like to learn more!
How does light therapy help?
Light therapy helps your body heal itself by supporting your immune system against harmful bacteria & reduces inflammation.
Here are three core things that happen during a Low-Level Light Therapy session that help with immunity & inflammation:
It reduces inflammation within your body, allowing it to clear out toxins, remove built-up cellular waste, and infection. This helps to smooth the liaisons in the body while also decreasing skin thickening.
It reduces the presence of nasty skin-harming bacteria, especially the kinds that our body are always fighting off, with certain wavelengths of light. When you use blue and red light wavelengths it kills the bacteria without causing damage to your skin.
Light therapy helps your body repair itself faster as it increases your circulation. It gets down to the cells that need repair and support. It allows for the body to flow more naturally and expel toxins with ease. In fact, the practice of Light Therapy is
So let's get down to it, what does science say…
I’m just going to quote these studies so I don’t miss anything:
“Phototherapy is used in the treatment of acne vulgaris, seasonal affective disorders, depression, psoriasis, eczema and neurodermatitis.
LED [lights] of the red and near infrared range [are] also characterized by the therapeutic effect. They have an ability to influence chromatophores and enhance ATP synthesis in mitochondria. To speed up the healing of wounds and stimulate hair growth, light sources of a weak intensity are used.” (Article 3)
“Patients with atopic dermatitis [Eczema] were treated with diode low reactive level laser therapy (LLLT), and the following results were obtained.” (Article 2)
1) Itchy sensation decreased in 79 of 112 cases (71%) after this therapy.
2) Skin eruptions improved in 69 of 112 cases (62%).
3) There were no side effects during and after LLLT.
If you are struggling with Eczema or Psoriasis (or any other skin condition), I would highly recommend pairing your light therapy treatments with a simplified and healthy diet. Pairing these together will bring you back to being pain-free & feeling confident!
I work with anyone interested in light therapy. No matter what it is that you are looking for, I know that we'll find a way to help you heal with light therapy.
