Navigating Skin Conditions and Finding Beauty

Updated: Apr 22

When it comes to beauty and health, our skin is one of the biggest indicators of how our body is feeling under the surface. An external representation of underlying health or pain. And not just that, as many of us know intimately, it also has a massive impact on our confidence.

When I get up and get ready for the day, walking out the door with bright clean skin, I feel beautiful and alive. This normally means that my body is feeling good too. So when things are out of balance and I feel my skin breaking out or feel that oily residue, I want to fix it as quickly as possible.

What exactly is skin?

This blew my mind the first time that I heard it. Did you know that your skin is the largest organ that makes up your body? It is!

The skin is made up of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis and subcutis. Beyond that “skin protects against germs, regulates body temperature and enables touch (tactile) sensations.” Your skin is made of some essential ingredients including water, proteins, minerals, and fats. Keeping these things in healthy balance will also help the health of your skin (and body as a whole!)

Our skin is a great indicator of our general health and what’s going on that we can’t see easily.

Skin Conditions:

Many of you have experience with this, but you may have also had other skin conditions that have haunted your past. Here are a couple of common skin conditions that light therapy can specifically help with:

  • Eczema (inflammation in the skin that causes itchiness, dry skin, rashes, scaly patches, blisters and skin infections.)

  • Psoriasis (When skin cells build up and form scales and itchy, dry patches.)

  • Acne (Occurs when hair follicles plug with oil and dead skin cells.)

  • Fever blisters (Infection with the herpes simplex virus around the border of the lips.)

  • Rashes (Temporary outbreak of red, bumpy, scaly, or itchy patches of skin, possibly with blisters or welts.)

  • Dermatitis (General inflammation of the skin.)

  • Rosacea (A condition that causes redness and often small, red, pus-filled bumps on the face.)

  • Lupus (An inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues.)

  • Warts (A small, fleshy bump on the skin or mucous membrane caused by human papillomavirus)
