The Sciatic Nerve Pad Placements

I don’t know about you, but I get trapped in my worries and nerves sometimes.

I get wrapped up in anxieties and fears and the long lists of things that feel like they’re building up beyond what I’m capable of completing…by the end of the day and work week it feels like my whole nervous system is completely out of whack.

Then suddenly my weekend is gone and I’m back in the cycle again.

This is part of why I want to talk about how important your nervous system is, specifically with one of the most important nerves in your entire body, the Sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in humans, originating in the lower back and traveling posteriorly through the lower limbs as far down as the heel of the foot.

The sciatic nerve supplies connection of your nervous system with a significant portion of the skin and muscles of the thigh, leg, and foot.

So basically, your lower body from your lower back, through your hips, and on down is tied to this nerve. It’s also the nerve that is deeply impacted by how much time we spend sitting for work & relaxation at home. Many of us are directly impacted by this nerve.

What is Sciatica?

You’ve probably guessed this already, but sciatica is what results from when that nerve is in poor health & needs care.

“Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve travels from the buttocks and down each leg.

Sciatica most often happens when a herniated disk or an overgrowth of bone puts pressure on the lumbar spine nerve roots. This happens "upstream" from the sciatic nerve. This causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg.” (Article 1.)

Of note - If you experience unexpected numbness or weakness in one of your legs, please see a doctor! This also includes if you have severe lower back pain after a big accident or injury or if you’re experiencing trouble maintaining control of your bladder/bowels.

What can cause or exacerbate sciatica?

Referenced from Mayo Clinic (Link 1)

  • Age. People ages 20 to 50 are most likely to have herniated disks. Bone spurs develop more commonly as people age.

  • Obesity. Being overweight increases stress on the spine.

  • Occupation. A job that requires twisting the back, carrying heavy loads or driving a motor vehicle for long periods might play a role in herniated disks.

  • Prolonged sitting. People who sit a lot or don't move much are more likely to develop herniated disks than active people are.

  • Diabetes. This condition, which affects the way the body uses blood sugar, increases the risk of nerve damage.

Here’s what you can do to take care of your body and prevent the onset of sciatica:

  • Exercise Consistently: Take the time to keep your body strong and your heart pumping. Really focus on building the muscles of your core to ensure that your abs and back muscles are strong enough to support your lower back.

  • Stand as much as possible AND Focus on maintaining a good posture when sitting. There are so many possibilities here, I would focus on one of the following: invest in a standing desk, find a seat with good lower back support, utilize low back support, (place a pillow or rolled towel in the small of the back) And focus on keeping your spine tall, back straight and your knees and hips level.

How does Light Therapy help?

When you use light therapy, the lights help to reduce inflammation within your body, allowing it to clear out toxins, remove built-up cellular waste and infection to allow for your body to naturally circulate as it needs to. The pain you feel in your lower back from a pinched or inflamed nerve can be supported and helped as the lights allow better bloodflow to that area. It’s essential that your spine and the nerves along it be able to decompress and regulate properly.

Light therapy also supports healthy blood flow to areas of your body, like your nervous system, to remove waste and to stimulate healing, increase tissue oxygenation, and increase antioxidants.

All of these factors are a healing balm for your sciatic nerve, which is more often than not, compressed throughout the day.
