Wound Healing - Diabetes 


Happy Saturday everyone!


I don’t know about you, but when I head into my weekend, the one thing I want more than anything else is to have the strength and energy to enter into the weekend to fully enjoy it. 

No worrying about the “work week hangover.” Or spending time feeling sick and ill. I want to feel like I’m in top form. Especially for Rocky’s sports games and for my little granddaughter too. 


I want to be raring to go. Not trapped in pain and the foggy feeling of having low energy. What does this have to do with wound healing? Well, when your body is in a state where all of its energy is focused on healing it leaves you feeling like you can’t fully live into your days like you want to. Instead you feel drained, lethargic, and waves of discomfort.


The pain becomes the only thing you can focus on. You forget what you were once capable of doing. 


I want you to find healing so that you can remember what it feels like to fully enjoy your life again. Including the joy of a peaceful weekend.


So what do I mean by wound healing?


People who are currently diabetic or who know someone who is diabetic likely know this from first hand experience, but diabetes causes pathological changes within the body that often impair all of your body's natural healing processes. 


What does this mean? It means that most people naturally heal from wounds while their body’s natural systems keep everything in balance. In someone who is diabetic, the natural phases of inflammation, proliferation, and rebuilding don’t occur as they normally would. 

This means that diabetic patients are more at risk for wound healing complications and can sustain their injuries for longer and have a higher risk of infection or more sustained scarring.


“Recent studies regarding its prevalence and burden show that diabetes remains a significant problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2018, there were 34.2 million Americans with diabetes and an additional 88 million with prediabetes leading to a staggering $237 billion in annual medical costs. 1 Diabetic wounds, including foot ulcers, affect up to 25% of the diabetic population. 2 Treatment of these wounds is expensive, generating at least one-third of the total cost of treating diabetes and its complications.” (Link 1.)


What are some common signs of diabetes?

Symptoms of diabetes:


  • Urinating often

  • Feeling very thirsty

  • Feeling very hungry—even though you are eating

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Blurry vision

  • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal

  • Weight loss—even though you are eating more (type 1)

  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)


How can you take care of your health and prevent exacerbation of these symptoms?


  • Eat healthy foods and create healthy meal plans

  • Maintain physical fitness and stay active

  • Reach and maintain a healthy weight

  • Get enough sleep

  • Take care of your mental health

How does Medical Grade Light Therapy help?

  • Rectangle (Blue and infrared) - You’ll place this rectangular pad on or around the wound. Be gentle with yourself and take your time placing this pad. This helps to encourage the increase of blood flow to this area and the reduction of inflammation.

  • Square (Red and infrared) - You’ll place this pad on your tummy to help boost immune system to address inflammation, infection and illness.

  • Skinny Rectangle (Blue and infrared aka the  Painbuster) You can place this pad on or around the wound depending on how large it is. Again for blood flow and inflammation reduction.

  • Rectangle (Red and infrared) You’ll place this pad on the low back, this helps to calm down the central nervous system.
